I’m a truant. But I’m not a total free spirit. Despite being raised Irish Catholic, I somehow internalized that Protestant work ethic. So even though I want to be playing, there’s a nagging voice in the back of my mind telling me there’s other stuff I should be doing.
Fortunately, I’m in travel. And that helps me escape that nagging voice at least some of the time.
“Hey!” I told a former boss who wondered about me leaving early for vacation in order to get a free flight using miles, “I’m in the travel business, so, if I’m traveling, I’m working!” And he bought it! He’s in the travel business, too.
My job: covering the nuts and bolts of travel: retailing, computer systems, distribution, fascinating stuff that most travelers never see or think about. It is a wild, wacky business full of brilliant characters.But I’m not a total geek. I love the world and the people in it. I travel as much as I can. I take my family with me. One reason I love travel so much: it blows you out of your daily rut. In our workaholic world, being a mindful truant is a good thing.
